HDPE as a FDA approved cutting board

Next time you're going to be chopping vegetables, fruits on your own chopping board, take the opportunity and check out it, the material most likely to be used as a High Density Polyethylene Cutting Board Material - Sheets cutting board is Polyethylene. Since it is generally FDA and NSF approved in addition to stain, moisture and odor resistant, Polyethylene is the best choice for cutting boards.

Other types of cutting boards made from wood are predisposed to bacteria and long term odors simply because they lack the desiredproperties that Polyethylene sheets offer, which include its non porous surface, chemical resistance and approval for food contact. The Polyethylene is certainly a durable and lightweight material that comes in several forms and is great for a wide range of applications. There are lots of varieties of Polyethylene commercially available. The most typical are HDPE (High Density Polyethylene), Low Density Polyethylene, and UHMW (Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene). The key difference has to do with the molecular weight and branching;  which happens when a monomer or atom is replaced by a longer chain of polymers (a very long repeating chain of atoms).

High Density Polyethylene is often used for the standard gallon sized milk jugs and glad food storage containers. Low Density is frequently used for food containers in addition to plastic sandwich bags. UHMW, which has higher molecular weight (2-6 million) which enables for an even transfer over the length of material which makes it stronger, allowing it to be useful with regard to bearing products for its great wear resistance. Frequently used in the food processing and dairy industry, Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene is a nice replacement for all kinds of other industrial materials along with great resolution for many wear issues.   Each one of these polymers are created from the same polyolefin plastic family, but all have certain properties that make them a little different. HDPE provides great chemical resistance, has higher impact strength and great energy absorption. Low Density Polyethylene has several of the same properties as High Density but it's not as dense at 9.15, as an alternative to HDPE which happens to be 9.34, in addition to being a softer material ( flexible coffee can lids). Additionally features a lower tensile strength and also far better, faster and easier heat processing.
UHMW is a strong material which includes great durability and low co-efficient of friction allowing it to be an ideal for sliding applications. Dupont makes the plastic material with a lower co-efficient of friction is Teflon - PTFE; which has a higher temperature and chemical resistance. Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene delivers a range of material options and properties,  and all these materials include fantastic durability which could be suitable for several applications. From the food industry to automotive, your kitchen as well as the warehouse, whatever your Polyethylene needs are - High Density, Low Density as well as UHMW, Polyethylene is an excellent alternative.
