Unless you’ve been living under the proverbial “Chester Rock” you will be well aware of today’s Royal Visit to Chester today. Putting any thoughts of whether you are a Royalist or not to one side, this is a truly historic visit. The reason for the Royal Visit is the official opening of Chester’s cultural hub, Storyhouse. The opening will be carried out by the Queen herself and the Duchess of Sussex. In case you are not aware, the Duchess of Sussex until quite recently was better known as Meghan Markle.

Welcome to our Chester Lifestyle website. In case you didn’t know, you will discover that the beautiful city of Chester, with it’s population of approximately 77,000, is situated in northwest England and was founded as a Roman fortress in the 1st century A.D. It is so well known for it’s historic and extensive Roman walls made of local red sandstone. Any visitor to this famed and historic city centre will see the very distinctive Rows shopping area distinguished by 2-level covered arcades and Tudor-style half-timber buildings.

A Roman amphitheatre, with ongoing excavations, lies just outside the old city’s walls. Like so many parts of Chester, it is a very popular tourist attraction.

Chester has so much to offer for both local residents and visitors alike. Attractions like the aforementioned shopping Rows and the world famous Chester Zoo to name just two. Chester also boasts the oldest racecourse in the country known as the Roodee. The Groves river front with it’s idyllic boat river cruises attracts thousands of visitors. Any visit to Chester should include taking in a tour of the historic Cathedral.

We must not forget the city’s many bars, restaurants and hotels offering a wide range of amenities.

Anyone visiting Chester will also find that the city centre and surrounding areas are very close to a network of motorway links to all major UK towns and cities.

What can be said about Chester Zoo that hasn’t been said before?

For those that don’t know, Chester Zoo is a zoological garden situated at Upton by Chester, in Chester, Cheshire, England. It was opened in 1931 by George Mottershed and his family. It is one of the UK’s largest zoos at 125 acres, housing in the region of 20,000 animals. Quite a staggering number really. Imagine the food bill there every week!!

Visiting Chester Zoo today with it’s acres and acres of sprawling land it is hard to imagine it’s humble beginnings.

We are sure many of you watched the BBC drama about Chester Zoo back in 2014. It is a drama based on the Mottershed family and their dreams of opening a zoo without bars. Because of the Mottershed family’s dedication, the City has plenty reason to be proud of their Zoo.
